*³µÍס§Bio-optical algorithms for remote estimation of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in oceanic waters exploit mostly the upwelling radiation in the red region of the electro-magnetic spectrum. The NASA's Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the satellite Aqua (MODISA) since its inception in 2002 has been providing high quality geophysical data products at scales unattainable using traditional sampling. The Level-3 MODIS daily remote sensing reflectance product at 4 km resolution, and their monthly binned data offers interesting characteristics on the global trends in reflectance in the past 18 years. It has been observed that there is a statistically significant negative trends (p < 0.01) in Rrs 645 that corresponds to the red region during the observation period (2002 &#8211; 2020). However, with the MODIS sensor aging and reaching maturity, it is important to evaluate the quality of reflectance data from the instrument. This presentation therefore aims to critically assess the relationship between Rrs 645 and SSC, and associating the substantial decreasing trends in red reflectance with global patterns of sedimentation.
