* We have two faculty members: Assistant Prof. Yamakawa, and myself. I am engaged in remote sensing, whereas Dr. Yamakawa is working on mountain disaster management.

* We use open-source softwares
We seldom use most of market software products such as MS-Windows, MS-Office, Arc/GIS, ERDAS, ENVI, etc. Instead, we mainly use open-source softwares such as Linux (Ubuntu), GRASS-GIS, QGIS, python, GCC, LibreOffice, etc. You may need to get used to these open-source softwares because "Do It Yourself" is the basic policy of the open-source.
* We study remote sensing, not GIS.
Our main interest is in development of remote sensing technique. Making something visible with remote sensing is our goal. We don't work hard on integration of layers of GIS information to derive something like planning or assessment. If you want to learn GIS, our group may not be a good choice.
* We have some coorperative institutes especially around Tsukuba:
JAXA/EORC, AIST Geology Remote Sensing Unit, AIST Atmosphere Environment Group, NIES Global Warming Team, JAMSTEC, NIAES, Hokkaido Univ, Gifu Univ, etc. You may have opportunities of working with people in these institutes.
* You can join us as a master or Ph.D student in this graduate school.
* You should check your academic ability it is above our bachelor level and/or master level.
* You should keep learning basic STEM skills by yourself. An example of good book for you to start is "Linear Algebra and Its Applications (5th Edition).
